Beginning at Cromwell’s Heritage Precinct, the route guides riders through Bannockburn’s renowned vineyards before entering the dramatic terrain of Cromwell Gorge, combining natural beauty with engineering landmarks.
The trail features a mix of cantilevered boardwalks, suspension bridges, and cliffside paths that trace the turquoise waters of Lake Dunstan. Cyclists also pass iconic structures such as the Clyde Dam, while enjoying sweeping views of surrounding vineyards, rocky escarpments, and historic sites that reflect the region’s rich heritage and transformation.
Designed as a grade two to three gravel track, the route is suitable for reasonably fit riders and is supported with premium e-bikes or manual 29er bikes. Participants are provided with helmets, panniers, and gel seats, while opportunities along the way include stopping at scenic viewpoints, cellar doors, and select food and beverage locations.
Riders are required to check in at the Central Cycle Trail depot in Clyde for bike fitting and safety briefing prior to departure. The experience operates in all weather conditions and encourages participants to bring essential gear such as water, sunscreen, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. Open to confident riders aged ten and above, the adventure offers a self-guided yet immersive way to explore one of New Zealand’s most picturesque cycling corridors.
