After warm introductions, we begin our ascent into the mountains, where the ancient Camino Real awaits. This historic footpath, shaped over countless generations, once served as a vital trade route linking the villages of Oaxaca with distant regions of Mesoamerica. As we step onto its stone surface, we are invited to reflect on the traditions, exchanges, and stories carried by the peoples who traveled these paths long before modern roads existed. The trail windes through communal territories, each section revealing different landscapes and levels of difficulty, and before setting off, we will gather briefly to select the stretch of the trail that best suits your comfort and energy. The air grows cooler as we enter the forest, where towering trees and singing birds create a serene atmosphere that connects us deeply with the land and its history. Our journey continues through mountain pathways that echo with the footsteps of ancient traders from Zapotec, Mixtec, and Mexica cultures. Along the route, we pause to enjoy the crystal spring waters that flow across parts of the trail, regarded by many communities as sources of healing and renewal. Local guides will accompany us, sharing stories of their deep relationship with the forest, a sacred space that provides food, medicine, and protection. As the day evolves, the trail leads us toward the mystical Cerro del Jaguar, where we conclude with a small ceremony at sunset, honoring the divinity of this sacred Zapotec site. Bathed in golden light, this moment offers a profound sense of connection with the past and with the living landscape that continues to sustain these traditions. It is an experience that remains etched in memory long after the journey ends.
