We did the Hierve el Agua hike, a hike to a waterfall, a how textiles are colored and made presentation and a locally prepared dinner. Small group of 5. All transportation. Breakfast. Super knowledgeable guide! Great driver. They get you there early to beat the crowds. Hikes aren't the easiest.
We had such a fantastic time visiting Santiago Apoala with our wonderful guide Angel and driver Jose-Luis. We started the day with a 2.5 hour drive to a private picnic overlooking gorgeous vistas with delicious vegetarian friendly food. Then, we headed to the hike which was about 5 miles and fairly intense but unbelievably gorgeous- it felt like looking at a postcard in every direction you looked. The water was freezing at the lagoon/waterfall but we took a little swim which was refreshing and the water was unbelievably clear! Then we hiked back for some of the best food we've had on our trip to Oaxaca thus far! Finally we ended the trip with our return drive back to Oaxaca City. Angel was so knowledgeable, engaging, and fun to chat with throughout the whole day, as well as incredibly accommodating and friendly. Jose-Luis was a great driver and so patient with us and the traffic we encountered on the way back! I would absolutely recommend this outing to anyone who visits Oaxaca who enjoys getting off the beaten path and seeing stunning nature.
We did the mezcal tour with Paola and it was an experience of a lifetime. No kidding. We were out about 9 hours. It included a home made snack at Shidubi palenque (search that with AI) and later a nice homemade tlayuda at Vale Madre palenque. Also a tour in the back of a pickup of the espadin fields. I told Paola she should write a book on mezcal. If you can believe it, we tried small sips of about 20 different mezcals, some that were made just for the family not for purchase. Well worth it.
