If you’re searching for the best slot canyon near Kanab, Utah, let me save you some time: Red Canyon Slot (Peekaboo Kanab) is absolutely worth it… but you need to know what you’re getting into. 🚨First — this is NOT Peekaboo & Spooky Gulch in Escalante. Different canyon. Different access. Different adventure. This one is just outside Kanab and it’s famous for those insanely photogenic red sandstone walls you’ve probably seen all over Instagram. Now let’s talk real life. 🌄 The Payoff Once you reach the canyon, the hike inside is short and sweet – just 0.7 miles round trip. This is a relatively easy and family-friendly hike offering breathtaking views. The narrow passages are lit up by sunlight, and there are unique features like the famous Moqui Steps and occasional log or rock scrambles, adding an element of adventure without requiring technical skills. It's one of the most beautiful and easy-to-access slot canyons in southern Utah. 🚫The Reality Check (This Is Important) GETTING THERE IS THE HARD PART!!! From the Peek-A-Boo Staging Area off Highway 89 north of Kanab, you’re looking at 3–5 miles of deep sand before you even reach the canyon entrance. • If driving: You absolutely need a high-clearance 4x4 or UTV. The route follows BLM 102 and then BLM 106H into the wash. Standard vehicles will get stuck. Period. • If hiking: Be prepared for a long, hot, extremely strenuous sand trek, especially in summer. Deep sand dAs with all slot canyons in Utah, be sure to check the weather before entering. ⛈️ Flash floods can occur unexpectedly, making the obstacles within the canyon very dangerous.⚠️ Avoid entering if rain is predicted. This place is the perfecThis spot in Kanab offers an excellent bucket-list slot canyon experience without technical climbing. Just remember to respect the sand, the heat, and the access. Totally worth it. Just go in smart.
You DEFINITELY WILL need a 4x4 and with experience driving & navigating deep sand. We drove in with our Lexus GX470. We started out without air down and almost got stuck in a deep sand area (because we picked the wrong route). You will see many different tracks but follow the one that you feel least sandy for you. Driving in is all downhill so don’t think driving back is the same effort (it’s much harder driving up sandy hills) Momentum is your best friend, so keep moving. DO NOT slow down or stop! Bring recovery gear and ropes so if u are stuck ppl can pull you out, we saw plenty of ATVs and tour trucks. The hike is doable if you are fit and don’t mind walking in sandy trail. The slot canyon is beautiful and easy walk.
Do the tour, enjoy the ride in and out and leave the stress of not getting stuck to the tour guide. Super sandy and you're not getting there without 4 wheel drive. We'll worth the price.
