The recreational AIARE 2 course is a four-day program designed for backcountry travelers ready to advance their decision-making skills in more complex scenarios. It focuses on leadership within small groups, navigating more challenging terrain, and creating travel plans when online resources are limited. Building on the foundational hazard-management model from Level 1, participants learn to analyze critical factors such as terrain, weather, and snowpack to make more informed decisions in avalanche terrain.

Unlike many three-day Level 2 courses, this four-day curriculum provides the time and depth needed for meaningful learning. Students will participate in 1–2 classroom sessions and spend ample time in the field, developing their understanding of snow and avalanche processes and applying observational skills to real terrain. This expanded format ensures a stronger grasp of the concepts and more confidence in practical backcountry environments.
