The Level 1 course is a hybrid, three-day, 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management, designed to provide a solid foundation for safe backcountry travel. The course begins with pre-course online learning, which is reviewed and expanded upon during a Zoom meeting on the evening of Day 1. This virtual session prepares students for the practical fieldwork that follows over the next two full days, offering a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.
During the field portion of the course, students will learn essential skills for planning and conducting a backcountry trip safely. This includes basic decision-making strategies while in avalanche terrain and practical rescue techniques, such as locating and digging out a buried person. By the end of the course, participants will have developed a strong understanding of avalanche hazards, safety protocols, and the skills needed to respond effectively in emergency situations.
