Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) provide an essential layer of safety when venturing into remote wilderness areas. Much of the Grampians/Gariwerd National Park lacks mobile phone coverage, making it difficult to call for help in case of an emergency. For hikers, bushwalkers, and adventure travelers exploring less-traveled regions—such as multi-day hikes along the Grampians Peaks Trail—a PLB offers peace of mind by allowing you to send a distress signal directly to local emergency services. These devices are highly recommended for anyone heading into areas where normal communication channels may be unavailable.
It’s important to note that most emergency communication devices, including PLBs, rely on a clear line of sight to active satellites overhead. Coverage may be limited in deep gorges, valleys, or under dense tree canopy, so proper planning is essential. PLBs should only ever be activated in true emergencies, as their signals are monitored and responded to by trained personnel. Please note that all gear hired from us must be returned to our Halls Gap office unless alternative arrangements are made. Carrying a PLB ensures you have a reliable method to call for help in the most challenging and isolated locations.
