Saxons Heritage Tour of Transylvania Explores Fortified Churches, Medieval Cities, and Dracula Legends

A four-day cultural journey through Transylvania is offering travelers an in-depth exploration of Saxon heritage, medieval architecture, and legendary sites across Romania. The itinerary traces the history of 13th-century German settlers who built fortified churches and citadels that still define the region’s cultural landscape today.

The tour begins in Bucharest and continues to Sinaia, where visitors explore Peleș Castle, one of Europe’s most ornate royal residences, followed by Bran Castle, widely associated with the Dracula legend. The first day concludes in Brașov, a medieval Saxon city known for its Council Square and the Black Church, the largest Gothic structure in Eastern Europe.

The second stage of the journey focuses on UNESCO-listed heritage sites, including the fortified churches of Prejmer and Viscri, as well as the Rupea Citadel. These landmarks reflect the defensive architecture and community life of Transylvania’s Saxon population, preserved across centuries in rural settlements and hilltop fortresses.

The itinerary continues to Sighișoara, a UNESCO-listed medieval citadel and the reputed birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, before visiting Biertan, home to one of the region’s most important fortified churches. Additional stops in Mediaș and Sibiu highlight the region’s architectural and cultural diversity, with Sibiu recognized as a former European Capital of Culture. The journey concludes with Sibiu’s historic center and a return to Bucharest via Cozia Monastery, with optional seasonal extensions including the Transfăgărășan Road and Poenari Citadel, further enriching the experience with dramatic landscapes and historical depth.
