Jozani Forest is renowned for being home to the Kirk's red colobus monkeys, known locally as Kima Punju in Swahili. These monkeys are endemic to Zanzibar, meaning they are found nowhere else in the world. About a decade ago, the species was on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss and other threats. However, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, their population has significantly recovered, with an estimated 6,000 red colobus monkeys now residing in Jozani Forest.

After observing these unique primates, visitors can explore the Pete Jozani Mangrove Boardwalk, a scenic trail that weaves through the dense coral thicket vegetation, lush mangrove forests, and across a serene creek. The mangrove forest is an invaluable part of Zanzibar's ecosystem. It provides vital habitats for a wide range of wildlife, including lizards, snakes, and a variety of bird species. More importantly, the mangroves serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion, protecting the shoreline from the damaging effects of storms and rising sea levels. The conservation of both the monkeys and the mangrove forest highlights the importance of preserving Zanzibar’s unique natural heritage for future generations.

I had a really good guide and Suleyman seems to be passionated about his job. Of course it's not a jungle like Amazonas or Borneo. But still good place to see more about jungle, wild life and especially to see and learn more about mangroves

$12 entrance fee for the shortest route. We had a guide who answered all our questions. The park is protected, and there’s a respectful interaction with the monkeys. The guides take care that touristis keep distance and preserving their natural habitat. All in all, a great experience, not a tourist trap, and definitely money well spent on a UNESCO World Heritage site. We recommend visiting in the afternoon and taking the small tour.

Might be not my favorite place of visiting. Beautiful-yes, some short knowledge from the guide (who’s assigned to be with every visitor of the forest) regarding the place history, which kind of trees are in there, seeing monkeys, going to mangrove forests. Entrance fee was less than 20$, unfortunately card payment is not available, have to bring cash.

I love you cant walk around the forest without a guide. No one is allowed to feed any of the animals which keeps them wild. Good conservation. Educational to go to the mangrove after.

Saw very cool red colobus monkeys, who can only be found in Zanzibar. They don't mind taking pictures at all. It was quite cool to take a walk down the trail. The forest is all built over corals! Very green. Interesting plants and trees that have medicinal values, well, most of them. The tour guide was very informative.
