Paul da Serra to Fanal Trail Showcases Madeira’s Ancient Forests and Volcanic Highlands

A remarkable hiking route across Madeira begins on the expansive Paul da Serra plateau, where open highland landscapes set the stage for a journey through some of the island’s most distinctive natural environments. From this elevated starting point, the trail gradually transitions into the dense Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site known for its ecological importance and ancient origins.

Along the route, hikers pass through the area known as “Fio,” where remnants of an innovative historical transport system can still be seen. Steel cables once carried wood and vegetation downhill toward Chão da Ribeira, reflecting the resourceful engineering methods used by local communities to navigate Madeira’s steep and forested terrain.

As the trail continues toward Fanal, the landscape opens into a volcanic crater designated as a resting reserve within the Parque Natural of Madeira. This tranquil setting offers a peaceful space for reflection, surrounded by misty woodland and gently rolling terrain that highlights the island’s geological and ecological diversity.

Fanal itself is home to centuries-old Ocotea foetens trees, many believed to predate Madeira’s human settlement, creating a primeval forest atmosphere unlike any other. With sweeping viewpoints over valleys, mountainsides, and cloud-covered landscapes, the route provides a visually striking and immersive experience that blends natural history, biodiversity, and scenic beauty into a single unforgettable journey.
