Svartisen Glacier, Norway’s second largest glacier, offers a breathtaking experience that combines raw natural beauty with rich cultural history. Spanning over 370 square kilometers and divided into eastern and western parts since the 1770s, Svartisen stretches across the municipalities of Rana, Meløy, and Rødøy. Its unique accessibility—particularly the Engenbreen arm, which lies just 20–30 meters above sea level—makes it a must-visit for adventurers and nature lovers alike. One of the best ways to experience this glacier is through a guided hike to the Austerdalsisen arm. Starting at Svartisvatnet, participants take a boat across the lake before enjoying a scenic 3 km hike to the glacier’s edge. Along the way, guides share stories of the glacier’s dramatic past and the legendary figures like Karl Johan Westermark who made it their summer home. With a lunch break near the glacier and views that will stay with you for a lifetime, this five-hour excursion offers a truly unforgettable journey into one of Europe’s most striking landscapes.

Nice glacier experience. Last two kilometers are magnificent hike at ice-age rock formation. Unfortunately glacier itself has diminished over the years. There is also nice ferry ride to glacer walk from parking area. Beware that last ferry leaves quite early and you are literally stuck at the other end of the fjord if you miss it.

Fantastic Scenery!! Svartisen glacier is the second biggest glacier in Norway, covering 370 km2. Engabreen is a glacier arm of Svartisen, ending at only 200 meters above sea level. It is at this magnificent part of Svartisen we want to take you on a glacier hike.

I visited Svartisen in the late 80's. Back then the glacier came down to the shore. Even in its reduced state It's a fine sight. The surroundings are pristine, and invites one to take five minutes off for a walk or peaceful contemplation. Mind your clothing as the winds off the glacier can be freezing even on a hot day. Accommodations are good. Rent a bike to shorten the walk. Have a pint at the restaurant overlooking the lake from the opposite side of the glacier. Take your time and enjoy the view, afar or up close.

Impressive glacier. Be sure to check the schedules for the ferry. Off season trips are difficult if not impossible. Bicylces are available. There is a parking lot for parking cars and campers next to the toad and very near to the ferry.

What a fantastic place to be.Was here in 2002 due to Namsos high school taking me here. From the latest photos I see it has receded a bit.The water from it was a beautiful turquoise colour. Wish we had this in South Africa!!
