A private walking tour in Policoro offers a unique and intimate way to discover the rich history and culture of this hidden gem in southern Italy. Far from the busy tourist routes, this personalized experience allows you to soak in the local atmosphere at your own pace. Begin your journey with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Siritide, where an impressive collection of ceramics, votive statues, and burial artifacts reveals the ancient roots of the region. Each piece in the museum tells a story of daily life, ritual, and craftsmanship from the time of the Greek colonies, giving you a deeper connection to the area's past.

Your exploration continues at the Siris-Heraclea Archaeological Park, where the ruins of the ancient acropolis of Heraclea come to life beneath your feet. Wander through sacred spaces like the urban sanctuaries of Dionysus and Demeter, where age-old rituals and beliefs once flourished. The tour concludes with a peaceful visit to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria d'Anglona, the last standing monument of the ancient city of Anglona. Set atop a hill between the Agri and Sinni rivers, the sanctuary offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and features exquisite frescoes inspired by Old Testament scenes—an unforgettable ending to a journey through time.

This is a must visit if you’ve any interest in history or archaeology, or just an interest in Southern Italy in general. A well curated walk-through of the ancient people who inhabited the area (prehistoric, Greek, Romans, Lucani) with a brilliant collection of artefacts discovered in the area There’s an outside archaeological site, exposing the layouts of “Hereklean” houses, ceramic ovens, mosaic floors and the acropolis area

Excellent. The VR experience was really good, our children loved it too. Great artefacts and displays. Friendly staff who spoke English - apologies for my poor Italian! Much larger space than anticipated from the outside. Impressive all round. One comment - perhaps the museum should have a gift shop where visitors can buy souvenirs etc.

One of the must-sees in Basilicata for anyone interested in history and archaeology. The exhibition offers an exceptionally rich overview of southern Basilicata through prehistory and antiquity, focusing on the Greek cities of Siris and Heraclea. The museum also has extensive sections on the non-Greek populations of southern Basilicata and displays some of the region’s extraordinary Early Iron Age burials. You may need to visit the museum twice to take in all it has to offer.

The National Archaeological Museum of Siritide at Policoro is fantastic and full of artifacts. The Staff were helpful and extremely kind. I suggest visiting but you should allow at least 4 hours. I look forward to returning in November or early 2024 with my wife. Bob from New York.

I was there in May of 2018 and spent a wonderful time examining the pieces that remain of Magna Grecia. We were the only people in this large, well organized, and clean museum. The curator found us and helped as much as he could as my Italian is poor and his English not much better. I would recommend this museum to anyone near the area. Professional displays that brought another era to life. Thank you to the organization that maintains it.
