Embark on a charming and intimate wildlife adventure with our classic puffin tour, taking you just minutes from Reykjavík’s city center into the vibrant bird-filled isles off the coast. Operating from late April to mid-August, this tour offers a front-row seat to observe puffins—affectionately known as the "clowns of the sea"—in their natural nesting environment. Aboard a small, comfortable boat, you’ll be guided to one of three nearby islands—Engey, Akurey, or Lundey—chosen based on the day’s tides and conditions. While we don’t set foot on the islands to preserve the birds’ habitat, our skilled captains bring the boat close to the shores for excellent viewing and photography. Along the way, you'll also spot a variety of seabirds, including eider ducks, arctic terns, guillemots, and cormorants.
This peaceful outing not only focuses on puffins but occasionally offers a glimpse of other coastal wildlife such as seals. The rocky, scenic shorelines set a stunning backdrop as our expert crew shares insights about the birds, their behaviors, and the local ecosystem. If conditions are calm, we may turn off the engines to let you soak in the natural soundscape—waves lapping, birds calling, and the wind over the sea—making for a truly immersive experience. This short but enriching tour is ideal for nature lovers of all ages, offering a memorable opportunity to connect with Iceland’s coastal wildlife just a short boat ride from the capital.

We booked this trip direct with Mr Puffin following a bit on online research. So glad we did. They are a well organised crew that made the whole experience from booking in to getting changed nice and simple. The Rib we went out on was in good shape, our guide was excellent, and we saw everything we had hoped for and more. Nice touches included binoculars for those that didn’t have their own, and a link to pics the guide took with his Digital SLR camera sent the day after the trip. We only had a couple of days in Reykjavik on a cruise, and this was a great way to spend some of that time. We’d definitely recommend, and would look to book one of their other trips if we are back there again. Well worth 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Absolutely incredible tour! We saw thousands of puffins and got so close! Our guide was lovely and very informative. We will definitely be back! Thanks from Australia!!

Our tour was excellent. Mel was our guide ; she did a great job telling us about the Puffins and the whales. We got up close to a local "Puffin" island not far from the harbor where there were about 20,000 Puffins. This was a short ride from the main Reykjavik harbor. After about 5 minutes with the Puffins, we started our whale watching part of the tour. We saw 3 separate humpback whales, a minke, and a porpoise. The boat ride seated twelve on comfortable riding chairs. The tour provided a warm outer coat and jacket pair for comfort and safety.

This was an absolutely fantastic experience. Well worth the money. We seen thousands of puffin’s nesting on the cliffs of a small island. We were able to get up close and personal with these beautiful birds. Our guide was awesome! He was incredibly knowledgeable, not just about puffin, but many other sea birds. Both the guide and the captain of the boat, were friendly, helpful and entertaining!

The premium puffin tour wasn't worth the cost. The first stop was an island with no puffins. The boat then chased puffins in the water but they were very shy and flew away when we got close. While there were many tiny puffins visible, the provided binoculars were blurry and useless. Nobody on the boat used them. Overall, it was an overpriced tour.
