Connemara Sheep Farm Tour Showcases Traditional Farming on the Shores of Killary Fjord

A privately guided farm experience in Connemara is offering visitors an authentic insight into traditional Irish mountain farming. Set above Killary Harbour, the family-run sheep farm has been passed down through generations and is home to around 200 ewes and their lambs, which graze freely across the surrounding hillsides.

Hosted by local farmer Tom, the tour begins with visitors being equipped with waterproof clothing and suitable outdoor footwear before exploring the working farm. A highlight of the experience is a live sheepdog demonstration, where highly trained dogs display the skill and precision that remain essential to managing livestock in the rugged mountain landscape.

During the summer months, guests can also witness the traditional craft of hand sheep shearing, using time-honoured shears that have been part of Irish farming life for centuries. A guided walk across the property offers panoramic views of Killary Fjord and the surrounding mountains while providing insight into the daily routines and heritage of upland farming.

The experience concludes with hands-on opportunities to explore rural traditions, including cutting turf with a traditional slean and, when in season, bottle-feeding orphaned lambs.
