We did not know what to expect. Security was rather rude. But once inside the synagogue is stunning and the Gabai quite knowledgeable about the history and sorrows of the synagogue from the 1800s to the present.

I came here as a Jew looking for connection. Instead of welcome, I was met with hostility. The caretaker, referred to as a gabbai was not only brusque, but physically threatening in manner. I was told to leave before ever stepping inside. Afterward, I read other accounts and realized my experience was far from unique. Multiple visitors describe the same figure openly expressing disdain for Jewish guests and hostility toward Israel itself. The irony is hard to miss: a synagogue, entrusted with memory and belonging, instead harboring contempt for its own people. Some reviewers note that pre-arranged guided tours, booked online and independent of the caretaker, can be positive, which makes me think the hostility on-site may be a deliberate attempt to discourage casual visitors or Jews who arrive seeking spiritual connection. Even more troubling, security seems to act in lockstep with the caretaker, mirroring or even surpassing his aggression. And then there are the reports that sting the most: visitors asked for money, only to be immediately directed out, as if the place exists less to celebrate heritage than to squeeze pennies out of passersby. For a synagogue, this is not just disappointing; it is tragic. If you visit, know what you are walking into. The building may hold history worth seeing, but the experience of trying to enter can wound more deeply than a locked door. For me, this was not only a missed opportunity for prayer and connection; it was a painful reminder that even within our own sacred houses, hostility can silence belonging.

Magnificent and amazing synagogue dated back to 1840th... Very rich in color and fresca. Miraculously survived national germany period. There is a keeper in place who speaks like 5 or 7 different languages.
