Explore The Rich History And Natural Wonders Of Skútustaðir Farm Near Lake Mývatn
The Skútustaðir Tour is a comprehensive four-hour experience where guests are guided around some of the most interesting locations on the farm while learning about its history and development. The tour begins with a short introduction to the history of the farm and our company, Sel. We then visit the farmer´s ice cream shop, Skútaís, where ice cream is made on site from the farm’s own cow’s milk, offering guests the opportunity to taste some of their delicious homemade dairy products.
Next, we stop at the visitor center, where guests can explore an exhibition about the nature and history of Lake Mývatn. Here we also share the story of the building itself, how it first operated as a school, later became a hotel, and a few years ago was transformed into a visitor and ranger center. This segment of the tour provides valuable context regarding the environmental and social changes that have shaped the region over the past several decades of development.
From there we walk to the Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters, where a park ranger joins us to explain the fascinating geology of Lake Mývatn and how the craters were formed. This geological exploration is a highlight of the tour, offering a unique perspective on the volcanic forces that created the landscape. The tour then continues to the local smokehouse that has been operating for over 40 years, where guests are welcomed by the smoker to learn about the traditional smoking process.
Everyone gets to taste the famous smoked trout, a local delicacy that represents the culinary heritage of the Mývatn area. This tour is designed to be educational and immersive, connecting visitors with the land, the history, and the people who call it home. By combining farm life, geological wonders, and traditional food production, the Skútustaðir Tour provides a well-rounded and memorable experience for anyone interested in the authentic culture and natural beauty of North Iceland.
