The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, established in 1972, stands as one of the most renowned and ecologically rich protected areas in the world. Named one of Costa Rica’s 7 Wonders in 2007, this magical destination draws nature lovers, scientists, and travelers from around the globe. The reserve spans several “life zones,” each hosting a unique ecosystem with a dazzling variety of flora and fauna. From towering trees shrouded in mist to moss-covered trails, Monteverde is home to hundreds of species including mammals, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, and countless birds. Visitors often catch glimpses of the elusive resplendent quetzal, known as the most beautiful bird of the Americas, along with the three-wattled bellbird and the black-faced solitaire, whose haunting calls echo through the forest.
Exploring Monteverde means immersing yourself in a truly living, breathing forest. The reserve’s rich plant life includes strangler figs, avocados, and cecropias, as well as vibrant epiphytes like bromeliads, mosses, and over 500 species of orchids. The forest is also the only known natural habitat of the now-rare golden toad. As you walk along the misty trails, surrounded by cloud-draped treetops and the sounds of nature, you’ll discover why Monteverde is more than just a forest—it's a sanctuary of life, biodiversity, and quiet wonder that leaves every visitor with a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

On our first day in La Fortuna, we chose to go zip lining — my first time ever! The team gave clear, thorough instructions and made sure everyone felt comfortable and safe throughout. All of the guides were so friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable. After zip lining, we did the hanging bridges tour with Favi, who was incredible! He taught us so much about the local wildlife — monkeys, snakes, tarantulas, and so many unique plants. It was such an amazing and educational experience. We even saw monkeys twice, which felt surreal. Favi was truly the best guide — highly recommend visiting Sky Adventures!

Very well organised, stunning views of the lake, good attention to safety and very clear instructions. Equipment was in good condition and the guides were excellent. Really recommend this place for the zip lining. 5 long lines and 2 very short ones of which 1 is a practice line. If you do the zip lining you go in the sky tram anyway to get to the start and you can access the trails and hanging bridges from the car park so no need to get the full package.

I’m not a zip line guy, heights are a problem. However me and my gal spent a few hours doing the tram up and back and had a marvelous time. We were extremely lucky as the clouds parted and the sun poked through on our midday adventure. We had grand vistas of the Arenal area with spectacular views of the volcano and lake. The best part was our guide Harrison, gave us a great rundown on the history of the area and some great stories about the man in the mountain. He showed us a hiking trail around the area and took the time to show us a tarantula den, spider and all. We finished off with an Imperial at the base lodge and thought how wonderful of an experience we enjoyed!

We did the Zipline and the Sky Tram. We had so much fun! They didn't keep us in one group which made us zipline faster and wait less. The guides were super engaging and fun - my partner and I were surprised by one of the guides when he invited us to zip one of the lines at the same time (my legs were wrapped around my partner's waist). The views were quite incredible. Day started out cloudy but soon became sunny. Despite not getting a good view of the volcano, we enjoyed the surrounding forest and the lake. The paid lunch was OK. It was a bit of a small portion and the flavours were very unusual (we did a Passion Fruit Chicken and a Creamy Avocado Tilapia). Don't expect this to be a restaurant-foward experience, and you'll have a lot of fun.

We did the ziplines today. Cristian and Henry were out 2 main guides and they were amazing! We had an 11 year old who was a little nervous. Cristian went down with him on the first line. The views are spectacular, the ziplines are fast and pretty long. They are pretty affordable compared to some of the others. There's a nice open air restaurant that my oldest son hung out in. He's not a big adventurer. The restaurant was also super nice with one of the best views I've seen of the Arenal Volcano. This place does not disappoint.
