This day tour invites you to explore some of Costa Rica's most iconic and scenic destinations, beginning with the majestic Irazú Volcano National Park. As the country’s highest active volcano, Irazú rises 3,432 meters above sea level and spans over 500 square kilometers, making it the largest volcano in Costa Rica. Its irregular subconical shape and vast, otherworldly landscape offer an unforgettable sight, often allowing views of both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans on clear days. The cool mountain air and panoramic vistas provide a refreshing contrast to the tropical lowlands, and the crater’s surreal environment feels like stepping onto another planet.
Following your time at the volcano, the journey continues through the lush and tranquil Orosi Valley, a region known for its rolling hills, coffee plantations, and colonial-era charm. You’ll also explore Cartago, Costa Rica’s former capital, steeped in history and tradition. Here, you can visit the famous Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, a site of religious pilgrimage and architectural beauty. This well-rounded day combines the natural grandeur of Costa Rica’s volcanic landscapes with a glimpse into its cultural and historical heritage, making it a perfect experience for both nature lovers and those seeking to understand the soul of the country.

This Park is amazing! Even before arriving, the road there is worth the trip itself! As with many other government parks in Costa Rica, you do need to purchase tickets in advance online. However if you forget or don't have internet access prior to getting to the park, there is free wifi at the gate. The park attendant will tell you how to connect to it and explain to you every step to get your tickets. The area is beautiful, all the amenities are spotless, the cafeteria has everything you need ! The views of the craters are exceptional! We really loved this park.

It’s has bern a very nice trip upward yo the volcano. Beautiful nature scenery and different vegetation. Majestic mountain views. Very beautiful to see crops and animals on the hill sides going up. The volcano site is nice. We even saw a fox coming doen the hill. The weather changes in a few minutes and clears up so that you can see in the crater. Back in 1993 you could still see the water in the crater, but this time we did not see it.

Great place. We got rained on really hard. They charge for parking on top of the fee that must be paid online before coming to the park. I would recommend rain jackets and warm gear, as this place is often cool due to the high elevation. The volcanic sand feels very nice between the toes.

Perception of the park is really correlated with the weather at the volcano top. If you are unfortunate as I was at the time of the visit, you could see very little besides the fog and then rain. It was much colder and windier at the top than in Cartago , so raincoat and sweater were handy. Nearly horizontal rain made for an unforgettable experience.

Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica, its top is often engulfed with fog as it was when I visited about 20 years ago. This time we got lucky with the weather. It was sunny and clear. But alas the blue /quartz lake in the main volcano crater is gone and the crater is now dry, and roughly 400 meter deep. The volcano has two other smaller craters both with no lakes either. There is a short trail along the main crater but not much else. It is certainly interesting to see the largest/highest volcano in the countries but other than the craters there is not much else there. The parking lot, and public toilets. I went there as a part of day tour but I hear entry fee is high, around $15 per person. Nevertheless I think it is worth visiting because even the way in the mountains there is beautiful.
