Submerged Roman Splendor Revealed at Baia Underwater Archaeological Park

An extraordinary underwater heritage experience is drawing attention to Baia in Italy’s Phlegraean Fields, near Naples, where the remnants of an ancient Roman resort now lie beneath the sea. Once a glamorous destination for emperors, nobles, and wealthy citizens, Baia was renowned for its thermal baths, luxury villas, and proximity to key Roman naval and commercial hubs such as Portus Julius and Cape Miseno.

Over centuries, volcanic activity in the region triggered a geological phenomenon known as bradyseism, gradually causing parts of the coastal city to sink below sea level. As a result, sections of the ancient settlement were preserved underwater, including mosaics, marble flooring, statues, and architectural remains that offer a rare and vivid glimpse into Roman daily life and elite leisure culture.

Today, these submerged ruins form part of the Baia Underwater Archaeological Park, a protected site established in the early 21st century to safeguard and showcase this unique cultural treasure. The park allows controlled access to one of the most significant underwater archaeological landscapes in the world, blending historical preservation with immersive exploration.

Visitors and certified divers can explore eight designated underwater sites, each revealing different aspects of the lost city, from decorated villas to ancient streets and public structures. Through this combination of archaeology, geology, and adventure, Baia has been transformed into a living underwater museum, offering a powerful connection to Roman civilization and the natural forces that reshaped its legacy over millennia.
