Submerged Roman Legacy Revealed at Baia Underwater Archaeological Park
Off the coast of the Phlegraean Fields in Italy’s Campania region, the submerged remains of Baia offer a rare glimpse into a once-glorious Roman seaside retreat. Known in antiquity as a luxurious health resort for emperors and elite citizens, Baia flourished as a center of grand villas, bath complexes, and maritime activity near key naval and commercial hubs such as Portus Julius and Cape Miseno.
During the Roman era, the city became synonymous with leisure and opulence, attracting travelers seeking rest and therapeutic waters. Its strategic coastal location contributed to its prosperity, while its architectural grandeur reflected the wealth and influence of its inhabitants. However, natural geological forces gradually transformed its fate over time.
The phenomenon of bradyseism, caused by volcanic activity in the Phlegraean Fields, slowly altered the landscape, causing parts of the ancient city to sink beneath the sea. As a result, Baia was preserved in an extraordinary underwater state, turning it into one of the world’s most remarkable submerged archaeological sites.
Today, the Baia Underwater Archaeological Park allows divers to explore this sunken Roman world firsthand. Across eight dive sites, visitors can observe remarkably preserved mosaics, marble floors, statues, and remnants of imperial bathhouses resting on the seabed. Each dive reveals a different fragment of ancient urban life, blending archaeology, natural beauty, and adventure into a unique underwater museum that brings Roman history vividly to life.
