Step away from the usual Lisbon and Sintra tours and embark on a private journey to the historical wonders of Óbidos and Mafra. Begin your day with a visit to the majestic Palace of Mafra, a masterpiece of 18th-century baroque architecture. Built under the reign of King João V, the palace was made possible by the wealth flowing from Brazil and stands as one of the grandest constructions of its time. This immense complex houses not only the Royal Palace but also a convent, a basilica, and a renowned library. Inside, you'll walk through the longest palace corridor in Europe—an impressive 232 meters—crafted entirely from regional limestone and marble. The structure covers almost four hectares, boasting over 1,200 rooms, 4,700 doors and windows, 156 stairways, and 29 inner courtyards. The library, one of Europe’s finest, contains over 30,000 rare volumes dating from the 15th to the 18th century. Flanked by twin towers and crowned with a basilica designed by Johann Friedrich Ludwig, the palace is a remarkable symbol of Portugal’s golden age.
Next, travel back even further in time with a visit to the medieval town of Óbidos. Captured from the Moors in 1148 by Portugal’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques, Óbidos has been intricately woven into the fabric of Portuguese history. Surrounded by well-preserved castle walls, this fortified village is a charming labyrinth of cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and flower-filled balconies. While exploring its highlights, you’ll also have a chance to taste traditional Ginjinha liqueur and browse local crafts. If visiting in July, you may even experience the famous Medieval Market (optional and at extra cost), when the entire town transforms into a living reenactment of medieval Europe. For two weeks, Óbidos comes alive with jesters, knights, parades, and performances that turn this enchanting village into a vibrant celebration of its historic past.
