The March Break Farm and Forest School at Jireh Hills Family Homestead offers an immersive, hands-on learning experience for children to explore the daily operations of a working farm. Scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 10AM to 2PM, the program provides a unique opportunity for students to interact with dairy goats, including learning the traditional skill of hand milking. The day also features an outdoor recess in the pasture, allowing children to connect with nature and animals in a safe environment.
The curriculum includes a horse training demonstration where children observe ground work and horse communication techniques with Winchester, the farm’s largest horse. Students will also participate in feeding the kunekune pigs and helping to guide them to their pasture, weather permitting. A visit to the alpacas allows for treat feeding and an exploration of fiber, teaching children about the different animals that call the homestead home. These activities are designed to foster curiosity, problem-solving, and practical farm skills.
After a lunch break, the focus shifts to the forest, where students explore woodland trails and engage in survival and team-building activities, such as shelter building. This interactive day is limited to twelve students to ensure personalized attention and a high-quality learning experience. Parents are welcome to stay, and children under five must be accompanied by an adult. The program encourages physical and creative learning, helping children develop confidence and a deeper understanding of the natural world around them.
By engaging in both farm chores and outdoor survival training, children gain a well-rounded education that promotes independence and teamwork.
