The Homestead Hands-On Learning Experience at Jireh Hills Family Homestead is a full day interactive farm program suitable for students of all ages. During this two hour session, participants explore a wide variety of farm life topics, including raising milking goats, alpacas for fibre, Kunekune pigs, and training horses and ponies. Guests also learn about predator and prey relationships in the bunny circle and meet Blinky, the blind baby cow. Students actively participate in chores such as scooping, carrying, feeding, and interacting with animals. The session emphasizes understanding where food comes from and how animals are raised on a working homestead. Classes begin at 10am in the heated BarnHouse, and students enjoy hot drinks at lunch time. Adults are welcome to observe or stay with children under five years old, and family rates are available. For those needing later pick-up, extra-hours care until 4pm is offered with additional supervised activities such as forest walks, bunny snuggles, and creative worksheets.
This hands-on experience encourages curiosity, learning, and connection with farm animals. Students gain practical skills, knowledge of farm routines, and insight into sustainable animal care. By participating in daily chores, they see first-hand the responsibilities of running a homestead. The program blends education and fun with an emphasis on interaction, teamwork, and respect for animals. Children leave with a deeper appreciation for farm life, animal welfare, and food systems, while adults can learn alongside them or supervise younger participants. The experience is ideal for families, school groups, and anyone interested in exploring small-scale farming.
