Gem Mining

Gem Mining is an exciting hands-on activity that lasts between 30 minutes to one hour and is perfect for families visiting North Carolina. It brings the classic childhood fascination with rocks and treasures to life in a fun and interactive way. Children and adults alike can experience the thrill of discovery as they search for hidden gems and fossils. This activity blends adventure with learning, making it both entertaining and educational. Every participant gets the chance to uncover unique treasures, creating lasting memories and a special collection to take home.

The process is simple and engaging. Participants purchase a bag of mining rough filled with gems and fossils, then head to the mining sluice where water continuously flows through a trough system. As they sift their material in the running water, the sand washes away to reveal colorful gemstones and ancient fossils underneath. Each “panner” receives an identification brochure to help recognize their discoveries, along with a baggie to safely store their finds. Since every bag contains a different assortment of treasures, no two experiences are the same, encouraging kids to return again and again for more discovery and fun.
