Ancient Printing Craft Comes to Life at tipoRenesansa Studio

Long before modern digital printing transformed the world, creating a single book required the skills of more than ten different professions. At the tipoRenesansa Studio by the Ljubljanica River, visitors are introduced to the fascinating history of traditional printing, where every page was carefully assembled from hundreds of individual letters. The studio preserves the legacy of analog printing and reveals the remarkable craftsmanship behind the books of earlier centuries.

Inside the workshop, wooden drawers filled with tiny lead letters, large wooden characters, punctuation marks, and spacing blocks showcase the precision and patience once needed for printing. Historic presses stand throughout the space, resembling museum exhibits while telling stories of a time when printing was a physically demanding and highly specialized craft. The experience offers a rare glimpse into the complexity of early publishing methods.

The workshop goes beyond simply displaying historical tools—it invites visitors to become part of the creative process. Guided by a master printer, participants select wooden letters, arrange their own designs, apply ink with a hand roller, and operate the press to produce a personal print. Each pull of the press reveals a unique creation shaped by the visitor’s imagination and skill.
