There is a special feeling that comes from watching fabric slowly take shape and glide beneath your hands. In this weaving workshop, held on traditional wooden looms that were once an essential part of almost every Slovenian home, you experience a piece of this rare and time-honored craft. The love for hand weaving has been part of Mojca Tomšič’s life since the 1980s and is woven into all of her creative work. During the workshop, you learn the basic weaving techniques and become familiar with natural materials such as linen and wool, while discovering how people once recycled and reused handwoven fabrics in everyday life.
As you sit at the loom, you observe your fabric growing row by row and take an active role in the creative process. You choose the colors for a small item, such as a napkin or a wallet, and weave your own unique piece to take home as a personal memory of the experience. Mojca Tomšič can usually be found working at the looms in the Weaving Studio of the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, where she and her long-time collaborator Barbara Lapuh have been creating unique blankets, rugs, tablecloths, cloaks, and scarves for nearly twenty years. This experience invites you into a vibrant world of handmade textiles and living tradition.
