I had a lovely afternoon at the Musee Rodin. You start in the house and then move to the gardens. There are many statues to look at, most by Rodin but others by his student Camille. The Thinker is a stand out as was the Kiss. There are other interesting art works including a painting by Munch and Picasso. The museum was his residence and was gifted to the state along with numerous statues and mouldings. Really well set out with lots of plaques in English and French to explain the works. The gift shop has plenty to choose from. Allow at least 2 hours.
As an historian, I have certain expectations when visiting a museum, and these surpassed mine. We were lucky enough to see an exhibition on Rodin’s works on paper, especially his watercolors on paper, which were fantastic and a great complement to a sculptures. The collection gives you a wonderful sense of his vast oeuvre. And the sculptures play with the beautiful grounds and estate. Lots of windows trickle in light, which bounce off the sculptures beautifully. It’s a wonderful experience. A lesser visited, but well worth going to museum in Paris. We would certainly come back! My only qualm is that Loie Fuller should have been mentioned in the timeline of Rodin’s life. She was a major contributor to establishing his presence in American collections, and was behind getting his work into the Metropolitan Museum in New York. She connected him to important American collectors, and advocated for him throughout America. Justice for Loie!
Rodin Museum holds a large collection of sculptures in a variety of mediums that were gifted by Rodin to the State of France. There are some sculptures by Camille Claudel. This building is where he worked during his life. There is a sculpture garden that contains noteworthy pieces like The Thinker and Gates of Hell. There are paintings by other artists. This was an excellent Museum that had such an amazing collection.
