Explore the diversity of the Basque Country on this guided half-day tour from Bilbao, combining history, architecture, and coastal landscapes. The journey begins with a visit to the Vizcaya Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can cross between Portugalete and the right bank while enjoying views of the Nervión Estuary. In Portugalete, stroll through historic streets, admire centuries-old buildings, and feel the connection to the Camino de Santiago.
Next, the tour continues to Getxo, a town that blends elegant residential neighborhoods like Las Arenas and Neguri with the authentic maritime character of Algorta’s Old Port. Whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and a traditional fishing atmosphere create a charming contrast with the modern side of Getxo. Finally, ascend to Punta Galea, a natural viewpoint offering spectacular panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea and the Biscay coast. Throughout the tour, a bilingual guide provides cultural context, local anecdotes, and insights into the region’s history, making this experience perfect for those seeking to understand both the heritage and coastal character of Bilbao and its surroundings.

This is simply amazing. We have been visiting the Basque Country for years and finally visited the Bizkaia Bridge and surrounding areas and have fallen in love. (Check out El Paladar by Zurine Garcia in the Gran Hotel Puente Colgante right next to the bridge. The food is simply amazing.) We not only rode over on the "ferry", but also paid the extra to ride the elevator up to the top and walked all the way across. It was pretty spectacular. (We also rode the small ferry that is right up stream because that gave us some additionally amazing views of the bridge.)

This bridge is a milestone of late 19th-century iron-and-steel engineering and urban transport innovation. The bridge is the world’s first metal transporter bridge, completed in 1893 and designed by Alberto de Palacio. Suspended beneath its upper steel truss, a moving gondola carries people and vehicles across the Nerbioi ibaia (Río Nervión)—an ingenious solution that has remained in continuous use for over a century. Visitors can also access the upper pedestrian walkway by elevator.

Visited while on a cruise 45 minute walk on flat ground that's nice to look around The bridge is fascinating, the gondola carrys foot passengers and 3 cars and the lift carrys about 6 people The views are stunning it's closed in so safe with kids If we go to Gexto we would do the bridge again

The bridge spans the estuary of the Ría de Bilbao where it meets the sea, in the province of Biscay (Basque Country), northern Spain. It connects the towns of Portugalete and Getxo. The Bizkaia Bridge is the world’s first metal-structure transporter bridge (also called a ferry-bridge), where a gondola (platform) carries vehicles and pedestrians across the river beneath a high span. Designed by engineer Alberto Palacio (with assistance from Ferdinand Arnodin) and inaugurated on 28 July 1893. It is considered a landmark of industrial-era iron architecture and engineering.

An interesting architecture bridge with a hanging gondola. If you have few hours to spare while in Bilbao. Recommend to take a train or metro to Portugalete and visit the site. Take the chance and go up the elevator and cross by foot on the top wooden platform, excelente views.
