This monastery is actually pretty small in size. You can't take photos in the main church. Behind the church is the bush... Church has a museum upstairs for an additional fee
I agree with the interpretation of the Eastern orthodoxy that the burning burning bush is in fact uncreated energies manifested as light. In my own experience it is an internal perception of our quantum higher dimensional reality that has much more to do with fasting and meditation. It is not bound to any particular geography or physicality. If you really want to see the burning bush I would reccommend the old adage of seek and you shall find. In particular try the version from the gospel of Thomas. If you're a devout Christian and love churches the church is very nice as you jostle hundreds of other tourists. I wanted to meditate for a bit while I was here but you don't have any access to that kind of thing unless you are lucky enough to stay at the guest house. It's very small and even the museum only has a few old books on display. It seemed most people were clamoring for photos on the surrounding rocks and taking pictures with camels. I'm happy I stayed up here for a few days and did some hikes. The view from the top of Mount St Catherine is amazing if you love nature and exertion (21km and 1200m ascent). Dress warm!
Visiting Saint Catherine's Monastery today was an experience I'll carry with me for years to come. There's something almost surreal about standing at the foot of Mount Sinai, in a place that has been a sanctuary of faith for over 1,500 years. Walking through those ancient walls, I felt the weight of history in the best possible way. The monastery's architecture is breathtaking—the way the stone structures seem to grow organically from the mountain itself, the fortress-like walls that have protected this sacred space through centuries of change. But what moved me most was the sense of continuity. Monks still live and worship here, just as they have since the 6th century. The Burning Bush chapel took my breath away. Whether you're religious or not, standing near the site where Moses is believed to have encountered the divine is genuinely humbling. The icons throughout the monastery are extraordinary—some dating back over a thousand years, their colors still vibrant, their faces still watching over visitors like me with serene grace. I was particularly struck by the library, home to one of the world's most important collections of ancient manuscripts. Knowing that these texts survived here, preserved by generations of monks in this remote desert sanctuary, made me appreciate how fragile and precious our connection to the past really is.
