Dating mainly to the 16th and 17th centuries, Ananuri served as the seat of the Aragvi Dukes, a powerful feudal dynasty that controlled this strategic route through the Caucasus Mountains. The complex is remarkably well preserved and enclosed by sturdy stone walls reinforced with towers, giving visitors a strong sense of how defensive architecture functioned in medieval Georgia. Walking through the gate, you immediately feel transported into a different era. Inside the fortress, the Church of the Assumption stands out as the main highlight. It was free to visit, easy to explore on your own, and genuinely interesting both historically and visually. Definitely worth stopping here if you’re driving the Georgian Military Road! You can climb up the towers (a bit steep, but fun!) for an incredible panoramic view. It’s a quick stop on the way to Kazbegi, and many tour guides include it in their itinerary — if yours doesn’t, insist on going. You won’t regret it!
