We had a lovely day at Jozani Spice farm with our very knowledgeable, well spoken guide Saumu. We started out with the tour of the farm and ended off taking the cooking class with Saumu as well. This was definitely the highlight for me! We prepared various dishes such as pilau, kachumbari, maharage, kachori and chapati. The food was delicious and the company was so enjoyable. It was lovely to have a guide like Saumu who not only demonstrated knowledge but true passion for the job and people! Definitely don’t pass on the opportunity to take the cooking class and tour together!
The guide Shazili was absolute brillant! We were curious to learn something about spices so we booked a tour. And we never do tours because we don’t like that. But THIS was absolutely worth it. The time flew by and it was so good. We learned a lot, were allowed to try and taste things and got a gift afterwards. You can also see some monkeys as a nice side effect.
I would not call this a farm but rather a botanical garden of spices. We visited in december and most of the plants were out of season, which was unfortunate. On the positive side, our guide was good, we had a chance to see and smell the fresh leaves of many well known spice plants and we had fun. We got a hand-made present for goodbye. All-in-all, a pleasant experience.
