For anyone with even a passing interest in mythology or ancient history, Knossos Palace is one of those places that feels almost mythical before you even arrive. Having long been fascinated by the tales of the Minoans and the legendary Minotaur, finally standing on this historic ground was a moment I’d quietly anticipated for years. We visited as part of a tour with Adventure Crete, arriving to find only a short queue before paying the modest entry fee. I’ll admit — I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect beyond the iconic Bull-Leaping Fresco that adorns so many travel photos. The site itself is smaller than I imagined, but fascinating all the same. One surprising discovery was learning that parts of the palace have been reconstructed, giving a sense of what the original grandeur might have been like. It’s history brought halfway to life — and all the more engaging for it. The summer sun was kind to us that day, making the walk through the ruins both beautiful and atmospheric. Paths are clearly marked, making it easy to explore without feeling rushed. Afterwards, the on-site gift shop offers a nice selection of souvenirs — from historical keepsakes to tasteful jewellery — and across the road, you’ll find local artisans selling handmade sculptures and Minoan-inspired art that are well worth a look. Overall, it’s an experience that blends myth, archaeology, and imagination perfectly. My Verdict: A compact yet captivating window into the ancient world — part legend, part history, and entirely worth your time. Wear comfy shoes, bring water, and give it the hour (or more) it deserves.

Very interesting. We paid one of the guides at the entrance, and Christina did a good job sharing all the important information. There have been quite a few liberties taken in the reconstruction that I wonder about the historical source for it. I didn't get to go to the archeological museum to see if answers were there in frescos or pottery, so I recommend doing them together.

We visited in November - a great time to go, as it was so quiet. We had a very knowledgeable guide - definitely worth booking a real person. It was a much more extensive site than I’d anticipated. Booking tickets was easy on the official site. It’s a glimpse into the life of a peaceful and advanced civilisation - the birth place of many Greek myths. Including, of course, Theseus and The Minotaur. Fascinating and beautiful. How sad that we didn’t base our civilisations on this one… We also loved the resident peafowl and were blessed to see a majestic vulture overhead. Loads of parking and a short drive from Heraklion.

My husband and I had a great time on this tour! The bus ride was comfortable, and we enjoyed the stops en route. Our guides on the bus and at Knossos Palace were both very good at sharing both history and mythology. They kept us on schedule. We opted to skip the archaeological museum due to long lines and had a relaxed and delicious lunch in Old Town Heraklion instead. Our driver did a great job, even with traffic from the farmers strike. We would be happy to do another tour with this operator.

This place is amazing. Overwhelmed. One can ask a simple question- how would they build without having today’s technology and tools? You can explore it on your own, taking a local bus from downtown Heraklion for over 2 euros- 2nd zone. Early afternoon there are less people. If you like you can hire a local guide or use your phone to download valuable information. I recommend 2-3 hours of your time. There is a toilet before the gate - nothing inside. There are few benches you can sit while walking around. There is a cafe and souvenir shop with not expensive basic guidebooks in different languages. There is a huge parking lot, I believe for free. We did not need it, since we used a bus.

It is a historical site worth visiting for sure! It is not a museum per se, so do not expect to see a lot of artifacts or monuments/art. The palace and its archeology are very interesting to learn more about via the explanatory stands and QR codes for more details. We were lucky the weather was perfect so we truly enjoyed our walk without being bothered by too much heat or rain. Good to know: -Try to buy tickets online as you can guarantee to go in at the day/hour of your choice. You can buy your tickets directly on the site on an automated screen (card payment), but you might need to wait for your turn to go in (we had to wait for 45 mins for our turn to start the visit). -There are toilets, snacks and drinks space, as well as a souvenir shop on premises. -Wear comfortable shoes and clothes because you will have to walk, and sometimes you have to go up or down stairs. Be aware that the palace is entirely outdoor. -Make sure you pass by the Throne Room, even if you have to wait a dozen of minutes in line to see it, it is worth it 😉 -Arrive as early as the opening hours if you are going by car because the parking space can be full very quickly. We had to circle round many times until we eventually parked at the restaurant a couple of steps before the parking lot. They were very kind and sweet, they didn’t accept to take money and asked us to take coffee/smoothie or have lunch at the restaurant in return which we gladly did 🥹 Happy visit! ☀️

The tour was great! The bus picked us up in Chania right on time and the guide on the bus was very helpful and informative. The guide at Knossos was excellent and the ruins were amazing to behold! We had some free time after the tour to either visit the museum (admission fee of 12€) or go to the city center. I would highly recommend the museum to see the truly remarkable artifacts found at Knossos. There was still a little time to grab a quick lunch before reboarding the bus. There was a 30 minute stop on the way to Knossos and a 15 minute stop on the return. The tour was very well planned and certainly a unique experience.

Great trip. We had good experience overall. Guides were great. It will be good if you have extra 1hr at Heraklion. Better have just 10-15mins at rest stops, so more time can be spent in Heraklion. We were back in Chania at 18:30, hence extra hour should be fine. From the description of the activity, you are under the impression that the 2hr free time at Heraklion are done after the archeological museum and that the guide will be with you there. That is not the case. You have to try and fit roaming the city, check the port, center, shops, grab something to eat and check the museum for 2hrs, which is challenging, however good trip overall.

Everything was on time and we were very well informed on the schedule, what to see, what are the options on free time and where to meet after. The driver was excellent and there was a nicely working air conditioning on the bus, so when we were getting back on board from the sun, we could rest and chill. The view during the ride is worth the time! The guide Manoli at the palace was very kind and profesional. It is a great plan to first see the palace and then visit the Museum where you can see all the artefacts and original fresks! Thank you for the trip :) Milena&Jeremi
