Review: Chania Cooking Class – Crete, Greece My husband and I had a truly wonderful experience at the Chania Cooking Class, located just outside Chania, Crete and hosted by Veerna and her welcoming family. From the moment we arrived at their local farm, we were greeted warmly by Veerna, her brother, and nephew, setting the tone for an authentic and memorable evening. The class size of about 25 people was ideal—large enough for a lively atmosphere, yet intimate enough for personalized attention. Each guest was provided with their own cooking station, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in preparing our meal. We started by crafting a traditional Cretan dish featuring lamb, root vegetables, and aromatic seasonings, which we bundled up and placed in a wood-fired oven to slow cook for several hours. While our main dish was cooking, the fun continued as we learned to make a variety of classic Greek specialties, including spanakopita, dolmades, and stuffed vegetables. The hands-on approach made the experience engaging and educational, and the vibrant atmosphere was enhanced by the generous servings of local wine and homemade raki. One thoughtful touch was the round-trip service to and from our hotel, making the evening completely stress-free. Overall, the Chania Cooking Class was a highlight of our trip—combining delicious food, local culture, and warm hospitality. We cannot thank Veerna and her family enough for such a memorable and tasty evening. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience authentic Cretan cuisine and culture!

Unforgettable. Nikos and Alex were such delightful hosts, not just for cooking, but also for conversation, and a history lesson too. We were a (very!) small class due to the off-season, so we had time to talk more, but I think even in the busy season it would have been amazing as well. This was the highlight of our trip.

We had a spectacular time in this cooking class. Enjoyed meeting new people, having the locals be the experts with the recipes and the flavors, Being in their own kitchen all the while laughing and having a great time. We particularly enjoyed learning some history of the Cretan people and the history of the food we were eating. it was a blessing to sit down after two or three hours and share our newly made dishes with one another.

My husband and I knew we wanted to take a cooking class on our honeymoon, and after reading the amazing reviews of Veerna’s we didn’t look anywhere else. Veerna and her family were kind and knowledgeable, their home is beautiful, and the food we made was amazing. I feel lucky to have experienced it.

We had SO much fun at Veerna’s cooking class - and the food was absolutely incredible (like one of our fav meals of the trip). Despite being the largest cooking class I’ve ever been in, Veerna and her family were super attentive to everyone there. She’s so knowledgeable and absolutely hilarious - just positive energy all around.

I had such a great time at the sourdough baking class with Uncle Nicos and Alex! From start to finish, it was an experience full of laughter, learning, and delicious smells. Uncle Nicos has this incredible way of turning baking into a story—he blends tradition, technique, and humor so naturally that you feel like you’re learning from a lifelong friend. Alex kept the class running smoothly, offering helpful tips and keeping the atmosphere upbeat and easygoing. We didn’t just bake bread—we prepared an entire traditional Greek meal to go with it. The kitchen filled with the scent of olive oil, herbs, and fresh dough while we learned how to shape our loaves and craft a full spread worthy of a taverna. It felt like being welcomed into a big, warm Greek family. Veerna joined us near the end, bringing her own spark of energy and helping everyone put the finishing touches on their creations. By the time we all sat down to eat, it felt like a celebration. I left not only with a gorgeous loaf

There are a few cooking classes you can choose when in chania,Crete however, if you want a true, authentic, warm experience, you should absolutely select this one run by Veerna with her brother Costa. Veerna is the real deal .. full of knowledge and passion for the cretan foods. She also goes over a lot of the historic reasons why certain foods are cooked either in stone ovens or Open flame. Really was a very interesting and delicious experience. Everyone was friendly, Her kitchen setup was incredible. (Covered areas for the hot Greek Sun right on her beautiful Olive Grove farm with some animals nearby). Quite close to the main town but far enough to give you a real countryside experience. She also bottles some oils and olives and goods from her farm, Sourced right there. Everything is fresh. Everything is fun and she is a lovely woman who knows how to organize and run a group experience. Other cooking classes we have been to on different islands did not even come close to this. We could not recommend this highly enough!!!

A warm, hands-on class run by a welcoming family, where we made traditional bread from scratch under the shade of olive trees. We paired it with their rich, fragrant olive oil, fresh Greek salad, and herbed potatoes. An authentic taste of Crete, full of flavor, tradition, and heartfelt hospitality.

We enjoyed this class very much! Not only did we learn how to make sourdough bread, but we had a wonderful meal, toured the olive grove, played with puppies, sat under a 500 year old olive tree and got to know our hosts. I tried fava for the first time, and I love it 😊 Cretan hospitality is the best! I highly recommend this class. Thanks guys!
