Experience the fascinating world of sea turtles at Nungwi Aquarium, located in the charming village of Nungwi on Zanzibar’s northern tip. Start your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel and enjoy a scenic drive to the aquarium, where you will discover a large natural tidal pool in the coral rock behind the beach. This unique sanctuary was established to rehabilitate turtles injured in fishing nets and to protect local baby turtles, offering visitors a rare opportunity to observe these incredible creatures up close in their natural environment.
Discover and interact with the turtles by feeding them or swimming alongside them in the lagoon pond. Learn about the rehabilitation efforts, the turtles’ life cycle, diet, and the conservation measures in place to protect these marine animals. After your visit, relax at the nearby Kendwa Beach, enjoying free time to swim, take photos, or simply soak in the beautiful surroundings. At the end of the day, you will be driven back to your hotel, leaving with lasting memories of an unforgettable marine adventure.

We went to this turtle ‘conservation’ site because it seemed to have the best reviews of the area and heaps of websites were claiming it was ethical. But scratch the surface a little and it becomes very clear that this place knows the right words to say to tourists who just want the Insta photos and might ask simple questions to alleviate their tourist guilt about animal welfare. Staff claim the ‘conservation’ piece is around ensuring the fisherman don’t eat the turtles (something which was made illegal in 2012…) or kill them as part of the bycatch, and can then earn money from bringing the turtles to this place. There was also claims of saving injured turtles but the staff member couldn’t point out a single turtle that had an injury. So then instead of releasing the turtles into a dedicated safe water space, this place keeps them for years so they can get the tourist dollar. The staff member kept saying they release them every year on 20th February. He couldn’t tell me exactly how many are released (the video he showed was only three turtles), what the name of the volunteer organisation was from Europe that he claimed offered vet assistance, or even which turtle had been kept the longest or for how many years. He literally said they only release some in February because it’s low season and can’t get the tourist dollar anymore. So it was very clear to us that this isn’t a conservation project (and claiming so is just flat out greenwashing). It was a money making scheme. I get it - everyone has to make a buck. But don’t claim conservation when it’s more about keeping turtles in a huge pond for years and over feeding them. If the Insta girls want photos with turtles, don’t pretend it’s about conservation. Just know what you’re walking into and how exploitative it is.

Josantos Safaris is thrilled to recommend the Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium as a must-visit destination. Our clients had an unforgettable experience feeding the turtles, which was both educational and heartwarming. Exploring the area on the clear-bottom boat offered stunning underwater views, making the adventure truly unique and captivating. The aquarium's dedicated staff and serene environment made the visit even more enjoyable. We highly encourage anyone visiting Nungwi to include this amazing experience in their itinerary.

Pretty cool experience to hang out with the huge turtles. I don't think the turtles mind all of the seaweed they are getting for free at all. We were told that the turtles are being released every now and then once they heal as they are mostly there to recover but it was hard to ensure if this is true or not. The guide also gave us a lot of info on their life which was pretty nice. The place wasn't overcrowded and we had plenty of time to play around.

We first found very nice and helpful people at the Aquarium. Not much traffic inside, so it’s peaceful experience.

We enjoyed the turtles. Around 45 of them some are really big. Of course we dont know if this is ethical, they say that they save them and keep them temporarily but i am sure some will stay there forever. Water look a bit dirty. 10$ per person the entrance

Loved every minute of it! The turtle pool Wasn’t crowded at all which allowed us to really enjoy the experience and take lots of photos. There is food and drink options in the aquarium too if you get hungry afterwards. Our driver had good communication throughout.
