Embark on a captivating private journey through Eastern Crete, beginning with a scenic drive to Gouves for an authentic visit to a family-run olive mill. Here, you will gain fascinating insight into traditional olive oil production, learning about age-old methods passed down through generations, followed by a delightful tasting of locally produced olive oil. The experience offers a genuine connection to Cretan culture and cuisine before the tour continues southward to the charming coastal village of Plaka, known for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful seaside views.
From Plaka, you may choose to take a short boat trip to the historic island of Spinalonga, once a Venetian fortress and later a leper colony, where powerful stories of resilience and history come to life during your exploration. After returning to Plaka, you can enjoy a freshly prepared lunch at a local taverna, featuring traditional flavors and fresh ingredients, if you wish. The day concludes in the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos, where you will admire the famous Bottomless Lake and enjoy free time to wander through the lively streets, browse local shops, or simply relax by the waterfront, taking in the vibrant yet tranquil atmosphere that makes this town so special.

Old mate at the front is a rude old man. We parked up fully intending to get a ticket but then just waffled on about his car park and his you can’t park there unless we got a ticket. Obviously mate. Time for retirement old man!

We went to buy tickets for the boat to Spinalonga here, as we have parked on the parking lot right next to it marked for customers of this company. We walked up and asked for 2 tickets, we asked some details and although the man did not convey some of the information very clearly, we understood enough. 1 ticket is 12€ and the man mentioned this price is "for the boat only" which makes sense of course, but he is indirectly pointing towards the fact that when you arrive on the island you still have to pay the 20€ entry per person. The man suggested that the boat leaves every 30 minutes, but in reality it felt more ad hoc, based on how many people are waiting. We waited for around 15 minutes for a boat in each direction, but the timing could be communicated a bit better.

There is no reception for phones so is possible you cannot pay by card, overpriced ticket for literally 5 minutes of navigation, personnel rude, the capitan of one of the boat saw us ready for boarding at Spinalonga terminal going back, totally ignore us, turn the boat without waiting, despite the boat being g empty and despite us waving, and left us waiting in the sun for another 45 minutes. Information non- existent, no timetable available on website.

The captain was very cheerful and friendly with all the passengers. Everyone was kindly invited to drive the ship. The captain told interesting stories.

Very interesting island and history. Worth a visit and you can probably spend a few hours exploring the island. The only cafe on site is OK for drinks but I would stay away from any of the other tourist bits as you can get far better and cheaper things off the island. If you're not with a guide would recommend a tourist book on the history of Spinalonga will help put things into perspective. If you're going to be exploring the to the top of the island where closed shoes helped as there are quite a few loose stones and steep steps.
