An easily doable hike for people of moderate fitness levels. There are horses for those who do not want the challenge. The peak is at 5036m above sea level so be sure to acclimate before. The hike each way is just under 4km and can be muddy in places so be sure to bring appropriate clothing and footwear. There are plenty of toilets along the way for a small fee of two soles and vendors at the top selling food, drinks and even stamping passports. I will say that the colours you see online are exaggerated, but nonetheless a beautiful mountain. All in all magical experience, highly recommendable, but be sure to know your limits and be mindful of the fact that horses don’t really exist to carry humans around.

one of perus best attraction. i have never seen a mountain with so many colors. i was lazy and didn’t hike so i took a horse up and a bike down for around 70-80 soles each. worth it in my opinion. i got altitude sickness because this is about 6000 ft higher than cusco.

This was a very challenging if you’re not used to the altitude but highly rewarding hike. We were lucky to have acclimated for a few days in Cusco before doing this hike and even then, it was a bit challenging as there are a lot is stairs and steep inclines. However, it is not that daunting. You go at your pace and if you feel as though you cannot walk anymore, there was horses you can pay to ride up. Be mindful that the horses will only take to close and you will still need to climb a bit more to the tip top. Once you are done with the rainbow mountain, you have a choice go to red valley, I highly recommend doing this.

I am from Houston TX, and there is no real way to train for such a steep hike or to get pre-acclimated to the elevation, but I was able to complete this hike I feel like I am fairly in shape. I run all the time, and I try to stay active… this hike kicked my butt. It’s roughly 2.5m one-way, which is fine, but it’s the altitude that messed with me. I felt so out of shape. We had a guide to help us to the top, but it took us a bit If you want to make it to the summit, but you can’t hike it (or don’t want to) there is the options to ride a horse and hire someone to escort you to the top. The top of rainbow mountain is 17k, but you don’t climb to the top of this. At the hiking summit you will make it to about 16.5k The views at the top are absolutely stunning. Rainbow mountain is gorgeous. There will be a bunch of hikers congregating at the base of the mountain, but if you want a better view and better spots for picture taking climb a little higher. There is a sign at the summit that you can take your picture with and also llama’s/alpacas. If you take pictures with the alpacas it is customary to leave them a tip The drive from Cuzco to rainbow mountain is about 4hr, but it is a scenic drive, and well worth it At the parking lot at the base of the hike there are restrooms, but it costs 2s to use. They will provide you with a couple pieces of toilet paper (basically small napkins)

Tours to Rainbow Mountain from Cusco is a long day. Starts early (about 4:30), but returns back around 5pm (YMMV). It’s a long ride (~3.5-4hrs) interrupted by a breakfast stop in one of the villages along the way. Once at the entrance there are three options: hike, motor bike (you on back), or horse. (See detail for prices 6/2025) Hiking is nice, but a bit strenuous at this altitude. I’d recommend the motorbike. The view here is beautiful. A very unique place. Probably not as colorful as some of the filtered photos you’ve seen, but pretty cool nonetheless. There are several paths to hike if you have the time and want different vantage points. Several condors in the area as well. Although it was a long day, I thought it was worth the journey.
