Abu Simbel – Absolutely Worth the Journey. Visiting Abu Simbel was an unforgettable experience and absolutely worth the effort. I flew from Cairo to Aswan and, the next day, took a same-day guided tour to Abu Simbel. It was a long day—about a 10-hour tour—but completely worth it. The site was very crowded when we arrived. Our guide made a great suggestion to start with Queen Nefertari’s temple first, since the Ramesses II temple was extremely busy at that time. By the time we finished Nefertari’s temple and moved on to Ramesses II, it was still crowded but much more manageable. The temples themselves are stunning. The scale, the reliefs, and the craftsmanship are truly impressive and make it incredible to think about how long ago they were built. Standing in front of them is an experience you won’t forget. If you want to really understand what you’re seeing, I highly recommend doing this visit with a tour guide. Having a guide adds important historical context and makes the experience much more meaningful. There isn’t much else to do at the site beyond visiting the temples, so once you’re finished, it’s time to head back to Aswan. Still, Abu Simbel is a must-see in Egypt and one of the highlights of the entire trip.
