Ras Mohammed National Park – A Self-Drive Experience Getting There Driving to Ras Mohammed from Sharm el-Sheikh is a pleasure in itself. The tarmac roads are wide, smooth and almost empty, making the journey remarkably calm by Egyptian standards. There is, however, a toll gate en route, where private cars are charged 25 Egyptian pounds each way. Google Maps is an excellent companion for this drive, but there is one caveat: you should set the ticket office as your destination, otherwise the navigation system may lead you down a dead-end road. The turn-off towards Ras Mohammed is not clearly signposted; you will need to turn left just before a police checkpoint. The road may look closed at first glance, but this is another security post, not a barrier. Expect a thorough inspection: officers checked the car boot no fewer than three times between the highway and the park entrance. No visa asked (I bought it at SSH airport just for securing access to the park). Entry and Fees In October 2025, the entrance fee for two foreigners and one car totalled 620 Egyptian pounds. This corresponded to three tickets, each marked USD 5, so it appears that visitors pay separately for both passengers and the vehicle. Payment is made at the main ticket office, a modest hut. Facilities and Accessible Beaches The Visitor Centre near the entrance serves as a starting point. It includes a small restaurant and what may well be the easiest beach for snorkelling directly from shore. Coral here begins almost at the water’s edge, offering a rewarding introduction for those who prefer to stay close to dry land. Further along, the Main Beach and the Hidden Bay also provide straightforward access to the reef without the need for a jetty or long swim. These are comfortable areas for relaxed snorkelling or simply floating over shallow coral gardens teeming with fish. By contrast, the famous Shark Observatory and Yolanda Reef—spectacular though they are—present much trickier entry conditions. The coral rises close to the surface, and at low tide the shallow formations make it difficult to enter the water without risking contact. These sites are best tackled by confident snorkellers or divers who can access them safely from a boat. Duration and Return Journey Allow four to five hours for the visit, which is sufficient to see several key locations without rushing. The return drive to Sharm is just as easy as the way in, though you will again encounter a 25 EGP toll at the same checkpoint. Final Thoughts Visiting Ras Mohammed by rental car is straightforward, inexpensive, and deeply rewarding. The drive is scenic and tranquil, and once inside the park you are rewarded with pristine coral reefs, calm lagoons, and quiet desert landscapes. Despite the occasional confusion over signage and the security stops, the overall experience is well worth the effort. It is an ideal half-day adventure for anyone wishing to explore Egypt’s most celebrated marine park independently, at their own pace. Edit: went there 2 days later. This time to toll was. 30 EGP out towards Rad Mohammad and 25 when driving back. This time the price for entry to the park was 720 EGP. Someone may be making some extra money here (also).
A Stunning Natural Gem Ras Mohammed is absolutely breathtaking—a must-see for nature lovers. We rented a taxi to take us there, which was super convenient and allowed us to explore at our own pace. The landscapes are incredible, from the crystal-clear waters to the unique mangroves and desert scenery. The snorkeling was out of this world, with vibrant coral reefs and an abundance of marine life. It’s truly a magical place where the beauty of the Red Sea meets the serenity of untouched nature. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!
Swim and do snorkeling 🤿 between the amazing fishes and the coral reef 🪸 , very beautiful and virginal beach. On the side The restrooms need deep cleaning and maintenance. If you reach there by road there is a ticket on the gates.
