No Ticket no entry. And there is no possibility to buy one on site. For some reason this spot is not able to sell Tickets on site like the Valle de la Luna or the Geysers im the north. Views must be good, we drove around the Area and had a few nice views too.
Piedras Rojas (Red Rocks) is a geological outcrop on the margin of the Salar de Talar, located at approximately 4,000 m elevation in the Chilean Altiplano, roughly 150 km south of San Pedro de Atacama. The site lies on the southern periphery of the La Pacana caldera system, one of the world’s largest resurgent calderas, within the broader Altiplano-Puna Volcanic Complex (APVC). The red rocks consist of the Tuyajto Ignimbrite, a mid-Pleistocene welded dacitic tuff dated to approximately 0.53–0.74 Ma by ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar methods. This makes it significantly younger than the massive ignimbrite sheets of the main APVC flare-up (~4 Ma Atana Ignimbrite). The rock contains phenocrysts of plagioclase, biotite, and quartz within a vitreous matrix. High welding—where ash and pumice fragments fused while still hot—created a dense, competent rock that fractures into the characteristic plate-like blocks visible at the site. The vibrant red colouration results from oxidation of iron-bearing minerals. The original dacitic magma contained ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) within biotite, hornblende, and accessory magnetite. Vapor-phase alteration during initial cooling, combined with millennia of groundwater interaction, converted this to ferric iron (Fe³⁺), precipitating finely disseminated hematite (Fe₂O₃) as grain coatings and fracture fills. The hyper-arid Atacama climate preserves these oxides, preventing the leaching that would occur in wetter environments. The outcrop’s distinctive flattened, cavernous forms result from salt weathering (haloclasty). Sitting at the salar margin, the ignimbrite is saturated by capillary action with brine from the adjacent salt flat. As water evaporates—rapidly at this altitude due to low humidity and intense solar radiation—halite and gypsum crystals grow within the rock’s pore spaces. Crystal growth pressure exceeds the rock’s tensile strength, causing granular disintegration and flaking. Extreme diurnal temperature fluctuations (common above 4,000 m) amplify this through differential thermal expansion, producing the rounded, fluid-looking tafoni weathering features. The adjacent Salar de Talar (~46 km²) displays classic evaporite zonation: central halite crusts where brine pools and evaporates, marginal gypsiferous muds, and borate minerals (particularly ulexite) forming as “cottonball” nodules in the capillary fringe. The stark white salt against the red ignimbrite creates the site’s celebrated colour contrast.
As others have said, you can view the lake from the two viewpoints listed on google maps for free, but as I’d travelled all the way I thought I might as well check out the official site, only to be told that I must buy online and they have no WiFi or mobile signal as soon as I’d parked up.
