Stepping into Pengshui, Chongqing, the words "Wujiang River" echoed in my ears, instantly conjuring up the tragic image of Xiang Yu, the Chu general, committing suicide. However, our tour guide laughed heartily and said, "Here, there's no desolation of a hero's end, only the gentle beauty of the Sichuan Basin." Slightly tipsy in the afternoon, we arrived at the pier. Modern buildings rose from the ground, creating a jarringly incongruous beauty with the surrounding green mountains and clear waters. We boarded the multi-story cruise ship, but unfortunately, we were a little late, and all the outdoor seats were already taken. We had to make do with an interior cabin. Looking at the VIP seats upstairs, where the best views were available at an extra cost, I couldn't help but sigh that even the natural beauty of the landscape has been tainted by commercialism. The boat glided gently, the river surface like a piece of jade splitting open, the verdant mountains on both banks glistening with dew, the water as clear as a mirror, sketching a long, unrestrained ink painting. I could almost see the ancients here, drinking wine in the breeze, singing with unbridled abandon. This landscape truly possessed a magical power to inspire poetry; it was indeed as beautiful as a poem or a painting. My wife and I strolled hand in hand from bow to stern, capturing the fleeting light against the magnificent silhouette of the bridge spanning the river. My cousin, the photography enthusiast, had long since disappeared; only my younger sister remained, guarding a pile of clothes and bags, refusing to move an inch until we took over. Only then did she break into a smile and join us in this verdant landscape. Inside the cabin, a scholar was demonstrating his calligraphy, his brushstrokes flowing like dragons and snakes, prompting tourists to open their wallets. Having traveled in mainland China for many years, such scenes of street performers were nothing new. The tour guide exclaimed that this hour-long voyage was only a small part of the gallery. The beauty of the Wujiang River lies in its romantic and timeless charm, rather than its majestic and precipitous nature.
