The Buddha statue itself is cool to see, though I'm not convinced it's the best viewing experience from the feet. Maybe the boat is the way to go if all you want to see is the Buddha itself. The pipes and wires and repair work covered in plastic pants are a little jarring but I think they're slowly working on all that. Apart from that, I like that it's not overly developed. Yes, there are paved roads, temples and shops, but there's still a good deal of rawness to it, unlike a lot of other local attractions. The hike up (and down) isn't bad, but give yourself plenty of time, you'll need to queue up for who knows how long, and you may want to spend extra time to take in all that's available in the vicinity. You're gonna to encounter people jumping in queues, spitting on the ground, being led through a bunch of shops that will claim to be the way through to the main site, and people will try to sell you tickets that you don't actually need to see the main sight. I only got the ticket to see the Buddha ($80).
The largest Buddha in the world, it has an amazing story behind. Easy to reach from Chengdu by rail and bus. It is a big complex and there are several entrances. Be ready to walk a lot and to go up and down stairs. You will arrive to the top part and then you can go also to the base of the Buddha. There are also boats to see the Buddha from the river but you need to buy a separate ticket and when I went the pier was actually quite far
Sacred area, even tibetian Monks come here to visit and pray. We "spoke" with one nice tibetian Monks, which was quite interesting and charming. It is a very beautiful area and has more to offer than the great sitting stone Buddha. Of course IT IS the Main Attraction, but you can find many other Buddhist Things which are also very beautiful to endeavour. However, It can get very, very crowded. We visited on an empty weekday...and there we're too many people so we skipped the walk down to the Buddha feet because the Queue already lined Up to the top. I can recommend the Spot, but be aware that there will BE too many people and guided Tours. It is a Business.
