Embark on an exhilarating and deeply rewarding journey up Kunanyi/Mt. Wellington, Hobart’s iconic mountain that dominates the skyline and offers some of the most spectacular natural vistas in Tasmania. This guided walk provides a unique opportunity to experience the wilderness right from the heart of Hobart, making it perfect for visitors who wish to explore Tasmania’s remarkable landscapes and rich historical heritage without leaving the city. As you begin your ascent from the base, you’ll move through a mosaic of ecosystems, from dense, moss-covered forests and cascading waterfalls to ancient rock formations and alpine heathlands. Each step brings new sights, sounds, and textures, offering an immersive experience that connects you deeply with the land. Along the way, your guides will share captivating insights into the mountain’s geological history, Aboriginal heritage, and colonial stories, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of this extraordinary landscape.
The climb to the summit is challenging, with steep uphill sections that demand stamina and perseverance, but it is equally rewarding. The panoramic views from the top stretch as far as the eye can see, encompassing Hobart, the Derwent River, and the surrounding wilderness, creating a sense of achievement and awe that few experiences can match. For those who find certain sections particularly strenuous, strategically placed opt-out points allow hikers to pause or descend while still enjoying incredible views from the Pinnacle. I’ve been to Kunanyi / Mount Wellington Tasmania many times, always during winter. But this time we visited in spring, and it was absolutely beautiful! Today reached 30°C, and the views were stunning — everything felt so vibrant and alive. Such a different experience seeing Tassie in full bloom under the spring sunshine.

One of the best experiences you can have in the Hobart. Just 20 minutes drive from the city. Most beautiful landscape of the city and the whole area from city to Claremont. Had a snow experience for the first time and it was amazing. If you going up there, pack your things for freezing cold. Must visit place in Hobart.

Great views in winter - when the road is open. You can check if it’s open on the City of Hobart website, together with webcam footage from two cameras at the summit so you can see what the conditions are like. Obviously if you’re close to it then you’ll see if there’s cloud obscuring the summit, but if you’re a distance away then this can be useful - as long as the weather plays ball! Bear in mind that even on a mild winter day in Hobart, the temperature change at 1270m altitude coupled with the wind chill from the very strong winds up there can make it painfully cold, so take care and be prepared for it!

My Wellington the mountain that looks over Hobart! A magnificent view of the entire Hobart basin can be seen from here. A 12km winding drive up the mountain. Plenty of Car Parking available, modern toilets and multiple viewing areas. Access to walking trails that lead over and down the mountain.

Spectacular views. We walked up using the Cascades tracks and carried on using various other tracks. Google maps is pretty accurate on timings and distance. We then returned back down to Fern Glade and caught the bus back into town. Overall the hike took us around 4.5hrs.
