Discover the abbey with me, your private guide, as I lead you through the secret paths of Mont Saint-Michel that help us avoid the crowds, and thanks to priority access we’ll skip the line and head straight in for a guided visit lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes, during which I’ll explain everything you need to know about this extraordinary monument, from its architecture and history to the daily life of the Benedictine monks, so that Mont Saint-Michel will hold no secrets for you anymore. After the abbey tour, we’ll enjoy lunch at a nice restaurant on the island, followed by free time to wander through the village, go shopping, or further explore the breathtaking surroundings. Founded in 709 after Bishop Aubert received a vision of the Archangel Saint Michael—who, according to legend, marked Aubert’s skull to prove it was not a dream—the site first saw a church built in the 10th century, known as “Our Lady Underground,” later reinforced in the 11th century to support the abbey church we see today. Over the centuries, Mont Saint-Michel developed multiple architectural layers, including the remarkable 13th-century addition known as “The Wonder,” a three-story structure housing the cloister and refectory; it resisted English attacks during the Hundred Years’ War without ever surrendering, was used as a prison from 1790 to 1863 with over 14,000 inmates, was classified as a historical monument in 1876, and finally earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
