The Muslim Quarter in Xian is home to some of China’s oldest and largest markets, as well as eateries that consistently sell out before lunch, offering a truly immersive sensory experience. On this three hour morning tour, guests will explore Xian’s unique breakfast staples at over five safe to eat restaurants and street stalls while strolling through the bustling market. The tour begins with savory fried beef pancakes seasoned with fennel, cumin, and Sichuan peppercorn, rolled and fried to create flaky, croissant like layers. Guests will also enjoy hot and sour soup made with tangy vinegar, spicy chili, rich broth, meatballs, and seasonal root vegetables, served with fresh cilantro and local pita bread. Walking through the Muslim Quarter market, participants will be guided through hidden backstreets to discover local vendors and a wide variety of foods and ingredients, providing an authentic glimpse into Xian’s vibrant community life.
The culinary journey continues with fried persimmon cakes made from fruit harvested locally, alongside Muslim desserts crafted from scratch at family owned shops. Guests will also try Xian’s famous handmade sour dumplings filled with meat and served in tangy broth infused with Chinese black vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, and chili oil. Visitors may even try their hand at making some dumplings themselves. This tour highlights the lesser known side of the Muslim Quarter, offering insight into the chefs and vendors who sustain the area’s rich culinary legacy. Covering over two square kilometers, guests experience a deep dive into Xian’s history, culture, and local flavors while exploring one of China’s most storied markets.
