At just over 930 metres above sea level, this is the highest point on State Highway 73, the scenic route that links Canterbury with New Zealand’s rugged West Coast, and it even stands higher than the better-known Arthur’s Pass. Reaching this elevation offers a real sense of achievement, along with sweeping alpine views that highlight the scale and beauty of the surrounding mountains and high-country landscapes.

An added bonus awaits on the other side of the pass with the tranquil waters of Lake Lyndon. Often reflecting the sky and nearby hills, the lake provides a peaceful contrast to the dramatic alpine terrain, making it a perfect spot to pause, take photos, and enjoy the quiet of this high-altitude setting before continuing the journey.
