Dyers Pass to Birdlings Flat

For this one we head up Dyers Pass out of Christchurch to the Sign of the Kiwi Cafe, with the chance for a relaxed ice-cream stop if it’s open. From here, we travel slowly along the scenic Summit Road towards Gebbies Pass, enjoying elevated views across the surrounding hills, harbour, and plains as we go. This section of the journey offers a peaceful escape from the city and a chance to appreciate the dramatic volcanic landscape from above.

From Gebbies Pass we continue our journey down towards the coast, making our way to the rugged, ocean-facing beach of Birdlings Flat. Known for its wide shingle shoreline and powerful waves, this remote spot feels wild and untouched, offering a striking contrast to the hills we’ve just explored. It’s a perfect place to pause, take in the fresh sea air, and enjoy the raw beauty of the Canterbury coastline before beginning our return.
