Slickrock is the world’s most famous mountain bike trail and is credited with putting Moab on the map as a mountain biking mecca. The trail offers a unique and challenging experience along a series of petrified sand dunes, stretching for eleven miles of steep ascents, descents, and off-camber slopes. Riders will test both their bike-handling skills and fitness on a route that is 95% rock with a few sandy sections. Along the way, cyclists are treated to breathtaking vistas, including views of the La Sal Mountain range, Arches National Park, and the Colorado River. Parking is available at Rim Cyclery, located in the center of downtown Moab at 94 W 100 N, making it convenient for riders to start their adventure.
Riders should come well-prepared for the desert environment, which can be extremely hot and dry. It is recommended to carry at least 100 ounces of water per rider, along with ample food and snacks. Extra gear, including a headlamp, warm layers, and a fully maintained bike with spare tubes, pump, tools, and a first aid kit, is essential. Moab’s terrain is notorious for shaking loose components and causing mechanical issues, so riders should plan for potential breakdowns. The trail is advanced and requires careful attention to safety and preparedness. Participants are encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment, and all riders must be ready for the shuttle system, which requires a minimum number of participants to operate.
