Mani, the land of stone and light, is a place where ancient villages sit on the slopes of Mount Taygetos, their tower houses and countless chapels steeped in history. The region blends steep canyons, caves, beaches, and olive groves with the sea’s embrace, creating a striking contrast that captivates all who visit. Every stone here tells a story, where the grandeur of the mountains meets the charm of the Mediterranean coast.
Our hike begins at the fort of old Kardamyli, following the ancient royal street that once connected Kardamyli to Sparta. As we walk along this historic path, surrounded by olive groves, pines, and cypress trees, we venture through traditional villages, narrow streets, and alleys, uncovering their rich past. Byzantine churches, stone watchtowers, old fountains, and mills offer a glimpse into the life of the locals from centuries ago. The vibrant colors and scents of wildflowers and herbs deepen our connection to the natural world, with Mount Taygetos towering majestically nearby. After a restful stop, we enjoy a healthy picnic, savoring local delicacies that restore our energy.

Beautiful small square between the tower and a church. It can be reached through the village or passing by the municipal free parking lot, through a rough pathway.

Kardamyli Old Town is located at the north . It is open every day from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, except on Tuesdays when it is closed. It is very small. Preserved very nice and there is people living there till today and restaurant operated there to Serb us

What a magic place. Entrance only costs €2 and the place is full of exhaustive explanations and displays, not just about this settlememt but about the region more generally. This is a must visit! It is also worth the walk uphill (1.6 km) to Agia Sofia, a little church with nice views of the valley below

An interesting (and free) dive into old Maniot architecture and culture. If you’re stopping through Kardamyli, definitely take a short walk up to the Old Town to explore. Kardamyli’s Old Town is a small grouping of building around the central keep. This small defensive settlement was vital in keeping the ancient Maniots safe from raiders along the coast. Thanks to local and EU preservation efforts, it’s easy to imagine what it was like to stand in the town during the height of its utility. The museum offers great insight into the working of the small village.

We stopped here on the way to the Viros Gorge hike. We struggled to find information about this hike, so here are a few tips. For the hike, just follows for Agia Sofia and the path is right there. You walk up hill for a while and then eventually it flattens out and leads you to a river bed. If you take a right onto the river bed and walk up it for a while, you will eventually get to a monastery. We took a break here and it was quite peaceful. We had the entire hike to ourselves and it was so pleasant. There were beautiful views of the sea and mountains. This is a must do if you enjoy hiking!
