Navarino Bay, near Pylos, is a pristine natural harbor where the island of Sphacteria serves as a protective barrier against the open Ionian Sea. This area, part of the Natura 2000 environmental program, is the largest wetland in southern Greece, offering refuge to both endemic and migratory birds. Beyond its ecological importance, the area captivates visitors with its unparalleled beauty, drawing nature lovers from around the globe.
Our hike begins at Divari Beach, near Gialova. From here, we embark on a scenic path around the lagoon, home to diverse species of migratory birds, including herons, flamingos, and ospreys, which you may be fortunate enough to spot. Continuing through the dunes, we reach the iconic Omega-shaped Voidokilia Beach, where a refreshing swim in its turquoise waters awaits. On our way to Paleokastro Fort, we take a detour to explore the Cave of the legendary King Nestor. At the summit, we visit the medieval castle, soaking in the rich history of the region. The breathtaking vistas from this vantage point are truly remarkable, showcasing the unspoiled landscape in all its glory. After a wholesome picnic, we return along the same path, concluding our unforgettable journey.

The castle is abandoned by the state like many important monuments. However it is still worth visiting and the view to Voidokoilia beach is breathtaking.

A nice hike to the top of the old fortress. Worth the hike to enjoy a spectacular view. We enjoyed the sunset as well from the top

We (a family of 5) visited the place on the last day of August. We walked along the fortifications (one needs be very careful) and watched a fascinating sunset. The place reminds one of times when Greece was divided amongst Frankish warlords following the sack of Constantinople during the fourth crusade in 1204, resulting in the dismemberment of the Eastern Roman Empire. Westerners have time and again sought their own materialistic goals under the guise of piety, and recently of "human rights". The Frankish castle is, however one beautifully situated monument. From the shore below, the hike takes about 30 minutes. Hiking shoes are a good idea. The view from above is well worth it.

The hike up the mountain isn’t for everyone, but the breathtaking view from the top is worth it. You can freely explore the castle ruins, which is fascinating but a bit dangerous. I started the hike at sunrise in June, encountering large spider webs and spiders blocking the path. The path may be cleared later in the day, but early morning hikers should be cautious.

Well worth the hike – amazing views! We hiked up to the Old Navarino Fortress, and it was totally worth it. The trail isn’t the easiest – it’s a bit rocky and steep in places – but once you get up there, the views are absolutely stunning. You can see Voidokilia Beach, the sea, and the whole area from above. It feels like a real adventure, and the ruins are impressive too. Make sure to wear proper shoes – this is not a flip-flop hike! Bring some water as well. If you’re up for a bit of a climb, it’s one of the best things to do in the area.
