Just a short ride outside of Lisbon, this was an absolute delight of a place! We visited in April and encountered just a small amount of tourists which was a pleasant surprise! At some point, we were the only people in the gardens which are absolutely a tranquil oasis and beautifully appointed. Someone said this is like a Versailles on a smaller scale and we found this to be for the most part true (minus the hordes of tourists which is a good thing). The palace had some rooms with the beautiful blue tiles that are so predominant in Portugal, some gorgeous furniture, exquisite chandeliers and statues and the gardens were well maintained. I honestly have to say I preferred this one over Pena Palace, much bigger and the inside and gardens are superior. Next time we are in Lisbon, we will visit again.

Lisbon was a port stop while we were on a cruise. The day we visited was rainy so we were glad we did not choose an outdoor activity. The summer palace is extensive building, designed for sun and air to flow through it. I felt the art was a bit amateurish compared to other locales around the med but I guess that what happens when you are the brother of the king. The gardens were well kept. Wish we had more time to explore them.

A beautiful palace with extraordinary gardens. Wet much influenced by Versailles but on a small and more accessible scale. There is a lot of restoration work taking place and it is great to see the craftspeople replastering, applying gilt lead and conserving. The rooms are sumptuous and the furnishings, tables, clocks and paintings fascinating. Such a rich and checkered history. Worth taking the effort to travel just out of town to visit.

Late September visit, very good weather. It is not very pleasant to walk in gardens with an outside temperature of 35 degrees. Stunning place to visit; spare at least 2 hours to see everything calmly. We have coffee afterwards in the café opposite the palace.

a beautiful palace, which is not as popular as Pena. Although it is very strange, it is no less beautiful than other castles, and at the same time there are many more rooms and there is a large garden with beautiful views and the first waterfall. It was a pleasant moment that there are practically no tourists there, and you can walk around the halls as much as you like and take photos of empty halls without waiting)
